Samuel Ajayi Crowther and the Network of Yoruba Print Culture

Samuel Ajayi Crowther was the pioneer of print culture and a new modernity in West Africa. The Yoruba dictionary he wrote and published in 1843 constitutes a point of departure for my ERC Yoruba Print Culture Project. A starting point for considering Crowther’s print culture network is the argument that networks offer a solid foundation for understanding various forms of interconnectedness in print cultures. Every moment in human history and every epoch in a society is arguably driven by a network of people with an interest in shaping the course of history in their era or culture. In the context of the Yoruba print culture, this idea of the coming together that leads to network formation can be captured using Stuart Hall’s theory of a conjuncture, which is: “a period during which the different social, political, economic and ideological contradictions that are at work in society come together to give it a specific and distinctive shape.” (57). Thinking of Crowther’s network means thinking through Hall’s concept of a conjuncture, which means pointing out specific periods of network development. For this presentation, that period is the nineteenth century.

In my MA classes, discussions of print culture and oral literature often begin with this conjuncture, in which I trace the movement of oral texts onto the pages of books, magazines, and newspapers. Bringing the research and teaching aspects of my professorial duties together, in my presentation, I will discuss how the 21st-century publishing network reifies some of the modalities of the 19th-century network and link my ERC project to my teaching.

Studying and teaching medieval Japan at Ghent University

The Japanese Studies programme at Ghent University is one of the most successful Japanese language and culture programmes in Europe. This year alone, the total number of our BA and MA students combined is more than 160. How does one introduce a new subject and new types of knowledge to this already established and very successful programme? As a scholar of medieval Japan with experience of research and study in several academic systems, I hope to share my insights on this fascinating and challenging process.

Annelies Lannoy is docente in de kritische religiestudies en vergelijkende filosofie aan de vakgroep Filosofie en Moraalwetenschap. Als godsdienst- en wetenschapshistorica onderzoekt zij hoe kritische kennis over religie tot stand komt. Daarbij legt zij de focus hoofdzakelijk op de ontwikkeling van de vergelijkende filosofie en godsdienstwetenschap in de 19de en 20ste eeuw. In haar inaugurele rede licht ze toe hoe ze via studie van globale correspondentienetwerken deze ontstaansgeschiedenis wil onderzoeken. In haar onderzoeksplannen gaat bijzondere aandacht naar de onderbelichte rol van buiten-westerse, vrouwelijke en/of niet-academische stemmen. Deze aanpak levert nieuwe inzichten op voor de sociale epistemologie van deze disciplines, en toont vooral aan dat onze definitie van wat kritische kennis is, nood heeft aan diversificatie. Vervolgens maakt ze de sprong naar het onderwijs, en legt ze uit hoe ze het onderwijs in de religiestudie en de comparatieve filosofie aan haar vakgroep wil versterken.

Welke economische systemen en praktijken beschouwen we als legitiem en welke als onrechtvaardig? Veranderende denkbeelden over wat fair is en wat niet liggen aan de basis van economische en politieke systemen, niet alleen vandaag maar ook in het verleden. In mijn onderzoek van de voorbije jaren legde ik me toe op de ontwikkeling van sociale ongelijkheid en mobiliteit tijdens de 18de eeuw, en de ideologische denkbeelden waarmee ze gelegitimeerd en gecontesteerd werden. Deze spanningen mondden uit in een tijdperk van revoluties – de Amerikaanse, Franse, en industriële- waarna een nieuw regime van economische rechtvaardigheid haar intrede deed, gebaseerd op een strikte scheiding tussen politiek en economie. Tijdens de komende jaren zal ik de relatie tussen economische praktijk en percepties van rechtvaardigheid bestuderen tijdens de 19de en 20ste eeuw. In dit onderzoek richt ik me op de uiterste grenzen van wat als rechtvaardig beschouwd werd in het globale kapitalisme zoals dat sinds begin 19de eeuw gegroeid is. Economische vrijhavens, belastingparadijzen, koloniale concessies, en belastingontduiking, en de disputen waartoe ze aanleiding gaven, verschaffen ons inzicht in episodes waarin het sociaal contract tussen politiek (democratie) en economie (kapitalisme) ter discussie staat, afgetast en onderhandeld wordt. Focus op deze grenzen van het economisch legitieme helpt ons om de wrijvingen, spanningsvelden en breuklijnen in een ander historisch daglicht te plaatsen.
