Jacques Van Keymeulen (Ph.D. in Germanic Philology, Master of Arts in History) was professor in Dutch Linguistics at the Ghent University between 2004 and 2018. His research interests (and teaching) were variational linguistics (dialectology), historical linguistics, lexicography and Afrikaans. He was for many years co-editor (and afterwards supervisor) of the ‘Dictionary of the Flemish Dialects’, a major scientific enterprise that started in 1972 and is still under way. In 2022, he was appointed 'permanent secretary' of the Royal Academy of Dutch Language and Literature.
