Prof. dr. Marc De Clercq
Marc De Clercq is emeritus full professor and honorary vice rector at Ghent University. Starting as assistant in 1973 he became full professor in 1998 at this university. From 1/1O/1988 up until his retirement on 1/10/2016 he was chairman of the department of general economics and director of the Centre for Environmental Economics and Environmental Management at Ghent University. From 1/10/1998 to 1/10/2001 and again from 1/10/2008 up until 1/1/2016 he was dean of the faculty of Economics and Business Administration of Ghent University. From 1/10/2001 to 1/10/2005 he was vice rector of Ghent University. As such he was vice chairman of the board of governors of the university and chairman of the educational council, the library council, the social council, the infrastructure commission, the financial commission, the communication commission, the university film club. He was also a member of the board of the University hospital, the Flemish Interuniversity council, the Flemish Institute of Biotechnology and the Aurora hospital.
In 1980 Marc De Clercq was the first Belgian economist to make a Ph.D. on the economic aspects of environmental policy. Since 1981 he taught courses in general economics, introduction to business economics, international economics, European economic integration, Public choice, Economic analysis of law, Environmental economics and environmental management at almost all faculties of Ghent university, at the Vlerick Business School and at the Université de Lille II (France). He was a member (chairman) of high level expert advisory committees of several national and international instances, i.e. the EU commission, the OECD, the offices of the Belgian Prime Minister, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Belgian ministry of finance, the King Baudouin Foundation, several industry sector federations such as Fevia, Agoria, Harvard University…
He is (co)author of 7 books and several (international) scientific contributions and he coordinated several important international research projects.
Dr. De Clercq is a member of the board of governors of the VRT (the Flemish radio and television company). He was a member of the board of directors of VDK Bank, the scientific advisory committee for the national accounts system , the Belgian price observatory and the Flemish Environmental Council (Mina raad). He was chairman of the Association of Flemish Economists and in 2000 he chaired the 29th congress of this association on Glocal policy in Europe. He is chairman of the Flemish Energy Company and chairman of UGent Connect, the high level ambassador network of Ghent University. He is also chairman of Roeland ( a youth association promoting language knowledge among the young).
Since 2010 he is a member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for sciences and the arts. He was appointed by the king as great officer in the order of Leopold II, the order of the crown and the order of Leopold. He is holder of the gold medal of the University of Bratislava.
