Sergei Christian
Sergei Christian King Huan (born May 28, 1987, Amsterdam) is a Dutch songwriter/drummer/producer best known as the powerhouse/co-songwriter behind the pop-punk band Call It Off a group he co-founded in the summer of 2013 with a few friends, three EPs, four full-length albums, and even a full Taylor Swift cover album later. Yes, really. No, he’s not sorry.
Before Call It Off, Christian played his way through just about every genre imaginable. After the breakup of his first band Waterworld, he co-founded melodic/hardcore outfit ThisWillKillYou, recording two EPs and a full length with them. He later served as the go to session drummer for folk artist Tim Vantol, ska-punk legends Jaya the Cat, and even toured with hardcore heavyweights No Turning Back and Wasted Bullet.
Tribute bands? He’s done those too: Vezpa (50s/60s tribute), Paracore (Paramore tribute) and De Swiffers (Taylor Swift tribute). Basically, if it makes noise, Christian has probably hit it with a stick at some point.
A wildly versatile player, Christian has popped up in projects ranging from hip-hop to country to alternative rock and even genres like techno and deep house proving that “genre” is really just a suggestion.
Outside the music world, Christian is a massive clothing fanatic. He’s currently plotting his own varsity inspired clothing line, because why stop at sounding good when you can look good too?
His drumming style is shaped by legends like Abe Cunningham, Steve Kleisath, Ilan Rubin, Travis Barker, Mike Marsh, and Taylor Swift’s first drummer, Al Wilson. Yes, the Taylor Swift theme is strong with this one.
Speaking of Taylor: Eighteen years ago, Christian heard a song on the radio that absolutely melted his brain. The songwriting, the harmonies, the production….. chef’s kiss. He was deep in the hardcore/punk scene, yet he found himself thinking, “Wait… this girl writes songs exactly the way I try to just… significantly better.”
People laughed. They did not stop laughing when he looked her up and announced, completely sincerely, “Her name is Taylor Swift, and she’s going to be HUGE.”
Spoiler: she was.
Now, 18 years later, he finally made a Taylor Swift cover album with his band: Call It Off. And while people still assume he likes Taylor Swift for her looks (okay, she’s hot...he gets it), the truth is he respects her most as a writer AND a business woman. Ask him about the similarities between old school Taylor songs and Call It Off tracks and he’ll need a whiteboard, a laser pointer, and at least an hour.
