• Alle modules worden on campus aangeboden in de vorm van interactieve en hands-on hoorcolleges, werkcolleges en workshops, waarbij actieve participatie centraal staat. Er is volop ruimte voor vragen, discussie en uitwisseling, zodat studenten de leerstof niet alleen verwerven, maar ook samen verdiepen en concreet leren toepassen.
• All modules are offered on campus in the form of interactive and hands-on lectures, seminars, and workshops, with active participation at their core. There is ample room for questions, discussion, and exchange, allowing students not only to acquire the course material, but also to explore it in greater depth together and to apply it in practice.

Inhoud

• De module Geschiedenis van het Oude Nabije Oosten biedt een breed algemeen overzicht van de politieke, maatschappelijke en culturele evolutie die het oude Nabije Oosten gedurende meer dan drie millennia onderging. We gaan terug naar de bakermat van onze beschaving: waar de eerste steden, staten en rijken ontstonden, het schrift ontwikkeld werd, en complexe economische, religieuze en wetenschappelijke ontwikkelingen plaatsvonden die aan de basis liggen van veel aspecten van onze huidige maatschappijen. Je kiest zelf of je deelneemt aan facultatieve activiteiten, zoals een workshop schrijven op klei, maar ook vertoningen van documentaires en een begeleid museumbezoek.
• The module History of the Ancient Near East offers a broad general overview of the political, social, and cultural developments that shaped the ancient Near East over more than three millennia. We travel back to the cradle of our civilisation: the region where the first cities, states, and empires emerged, where writing was developed, and where complex economic, religious, and scientific developments took place that still underpin many aspects of our present-day societies. You may choose whether or not to take part in optional activities, such as a workshop on writing on clay, documentary screenings, and a guided museum visit.
• De module Economie en Samenleving van het Oude Nabije Oosten biedt een algemene en breed toegankelijke inleiding tot de maatschappelijke, economische en politieke structuren van het oude Nabije Oosten. Aan de hand van thematische colleges over onder meer geld en markt, landbouw, recht, handel, politieke instellingen, sociale klassen en gender maken studenten kennis met de complexe organisatie van oude samenlevingen. Via casestudy’s, visueel materiaal en fragmenten uit historische, literaire en administratieve bronnen leren studenten deze wereld van dichtbij kennen. In seminaries leren zij bovendien hoe zij secundaire literatuur en primaire bronnen in vertaling kritisch kunnen raadplegen en verwerken, met het oog op het schrijven van een paper en het geven van een presentatie binnen een jaarlijks wisselend projectthema.
• The module Economy and Society of the Ancient Near East offers a general and accessible introduction to the social, economic, and political structures of the ancient Near East. Through thematic lectures on topics such as money and markets, agriculture, law, trade, political institutions, social classes, and gender, students become acquainted with the complex organisation of ancient societies. Through case studies, visual material, and excerpts from historical, literary, and administrative sources, students are introduced to this world in depth. In seminars, they also learn how to consult and critically assess secondary scholarship and primary sources in translation, with a view to writing a paper and giving a presentation within a project theme that changes from year to year.
• De module Oud-Babylonisch biedt een algemene en breed toegankelijke inleiding tot het schrift en de taal van Babylonië. De ontwikkeling van schrift en taal wordt kort geschetst, waarna we samen het traject van een Babylonische leerling in de schrijversschool volgen die stap voor stap woorden en korte zinnen leert lezen, schrijven en begrijpen. De begeleiding gebeurt in kleine groep en op maat door middel van individuele feedback, wat toelaat passages uit legendarische documenten zoals de Codex van Hammurabi of het Epos van Gilgamesh in hun oorspronkelijke vorm te benaderen.
• The module Old Babylonian I provides a general and accessible introduction to the script and language of Babylonia. After a brief outline of the development of writing and language, we follow together the path of a Babylonian pupil in the scribal school, learning step by step how to read, write, and understand words and short sentences. Teaching is provided in small groups and tailored to individual needs through personalised feedback, allowing students to approach passages from legendary texts such as the Code of Hammurabi or the Epic of Gilgamesh in their original form.
